The Many Generations - One Team Workshop

Generations at work can work better together.

An engaging workshop that helps your team better understand one another, respect one another, and collaborate with one another. Because getting better takes all of us, and all of us means all of us.
The Challenge

Reframe the "generations conversation" from under-appreciated to understanding.

Why does it matter to better understand who we are as distinct generations?

Because each generation entered a very different world of work. How we define collaboration, communication, and purpose is shaped by those formative contexts. Understanding these differences helps us work together with more empathy and effectiveness.

Why can't teams improve generational understanding on their own?

Most conversations about generations at work happen when something goes wrong. A misstep, a misunderstanding, a moment where we just don’t see things the same way. And too often, we look for someone—or some generation—to blame.

What's the risk of not addressing generational understanding?

We miss out on the full range of insight and innovation across the team. Without generational understanding, we waste time navigating avoidable tension—and risk undervaluing key perspectives that could drive shared success.

Our Solution

Many generations. One team.

Our Many Generations, One Team workshop is designed to help team members better understand each others’ generational backstories. We'll explore how each shows up at work because they came of age:

  • Traditionalists: during the Depression and World War II, shaping a worldview around sacrifice and discipline.
  • Baby Boomers: during a rebounding economy and high American idealism, shaping a worldview around loyalty and expectations.
  • Generation X: during increased divorce rates and a media explosion, shaping a worldview around healthy skepticism and autonomy.
  • Millennials: during social media and school violence, shaping a worldview around authenticity and “everything is personal.”
  • Gen Z: during the emotional health and wellness boom and COVID, shaping a worldview around holistic health and boundaries.
  • Gen Alpha: during COVID and a fully digital world, shaping a worldview around highly personalized experiences and remote capabilities.

Backstories build empathy, and empathy builds the opportunity for greater connection.

What to expect
Engaging and Responsive Facilitation
Part of creating space for learning is being responsive to each individual group, parking on ideas that resonate, taking the time to address specific concerns, and asking earnest questions. As such, our flow is always interruptible for moments that create or increase learning. In general, though, we'll split our time evenly between the generations, learning the backstories to help participants make sense of the generational frameworks, and holding space for discussion about them.
Practical Tools and Takeaways
We'll provide some pre-work (if desired) to help participants think about the content and flow of the workshop, as well as handouts to use during it.
Flexible Time Commitment
This workshop is typically offered as a 1.5-3 hour session, depending on your goals, team, and time constraints. Generally, the more time you can devote to the workshop, the more we can assist the team in making sense of the ideas and applying them to their workplace situations.
